The average web design project reviewed on Clutch costs $38,105, yet Clutch also says most of the projects it reviews cost less than $10,000 (Clutch pricing guide, updated September 2026). Both numbers are true, and neither tells you what your redesign will cost, because the spread comes from three decisions: how many distinct page layouts the site needs, which platform it runs on, and who writes the words.
This guide prices each of those decisions separately, using agency price lists, the Editorial Freelancers Association's 2026 rate survey, the ProCopywriters 2026 survey and published platform prices, all opened on 21 October 2026. Agency figures are vendor figures and are labelled as such.
The average cost of a website redesign, and why it misleads
Clutch's average of $38,105 comes from verified client reviews, with a typical project running about seven months. Most projects cost far less, because a small number of large builds pull the mean up. If you have read our Website Redesign Statistics 2026 page, you will know the same gap shows up in what buyers expect: half the companies in the Databox survey wanted to spend under $10,000, and just over 30% thought $10,000 to $20,000 was right.
Price lists that sort by site size are more useful than any average. Four published ones are below. All are agencies describing their own market.

The bands overlap so much that page count alone cannot place you in one. WebFX's small band is eightfold wide. Orbix states the reason plainly: agencies price per unique layout, not per URL. A 40-page site with five templates (home, service, case study, blog post, contact) costs less to build than a 15-page site where every page is designed from scratch. Before you compare quotes, count your templates, not your pages.
WebFX also splits its small band by depth of work: a light refresh at $3,000 to $5,000 against a remodel or rebuild at $7,000 to $15,000. Orbix puts a visual refresh, new colours and a logo swap on the existing structure, at $2,000 to $8,000. If your structure and content still work, that is the cheaper project.
Website redesign cost breakdown, line by line

Kolonell puts its median redesign at €12,000 to €15,000. Orbix says most mid-size business sites land between $18,000 and $35,000. The line items explain why two quotes for the same site can differ by a factor of three: one includes copy, migration and technical SEO, and the other assumes you supply all three.
Migration scales with pages, not templates. Orbix prices content migration at $3,000 to $6,000 for 1 to 25 pages, $6,000 to $12,000 for 25 to 50, and $12,000 to $25,000 for 50 to 100 or more. That is the line where page count matters, because every URL needs moving, checking and redirecting.
Technical SEO is the line to protect. Kolonell prices it at €1,500 to €3,500. It pays for the redirect map, the titles and descriptions carried across, and the checks after launch. Our Website Migration Without Losing Rankings guide covers the redirect map in detail. In budget terms, it is a small line that protects the pages already bringing in search traffic, which is why we would never cut it to make a quote fit.
Integrations compound. Orbix estimates that a site with five integrations costs 20% to 35% more than the same site without them. A CRM form, a booking tool and a product feed are three separate jobs, not one.
Who writes the copy: three ways to pay for it
Copy is the line buyers most often leave out of the budget, and the one that most often delays launch. There are three ways to buy it.
You write it. It costs no invoice, but it costs time, and that time is where schedules slip. Kolonell attributes 80% of delays on its projects to client-side content approval, a vendor's own observation rather than a survey. Our four-week process puts copy before design for the same reason: layouts built around placeholder text get rebuilt when the real words arrive.
A freelance copywriter writes it. The Editorial Freelancers Association's 2026 rate chart, based on more than 1,100 members reporting their 2025 rates, gives the cleanest published benchmark. In the UK, the ProCopywriters 2026 survey of 383 freelance copywriters reports a median day rate of £440, within a range of £300 to £1,800.
The agency writes it. WebFX lists copywriting as its own column by site size, and Orbix quotes a 20-page site.
| Route | Published rate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Freelance, business and marketing, work for hire | 32 to 87.5 cents a word; $65 to $75 an hour; $80 to $218.75 per 250-word page | EFA, 2026 chart |
| Freelance, business and marketing, ghostwritten | 50 cents to $1.00 a word; $87.50 to $125 an hour | EFA, 2026 chart |
| Freelance, UK day rate | Median £440; range £300 to £1,800 | ProCopywriters, 2026 survey |
| Agency, 1 to 50 page site | $2,000 to $4,000 | WebFX, vendor |
| Agency, 50 to 150 page site | $4,000 to $7,000 | WebFX, vendor |
| Agency, 150 to 250+ page site | $6,000 to $10,000 | WebFX, vendor |
| Agency, 20-page site | $3,000 to $10,000 | Orbix Studio, vendor |

The rows do not line up neatly, and the reason matters. A 25-page site at 400 words a page is 10,000 words. At the EFA's per-word band, that is $3,200 to $8,750 from a freelancer, yet WebFX quotes $2,000 to $4,000 for up to 50 pages. The likely gap is definition: an agency package often means editing your existing copy, shorter pages, or fewer rounds of research. Ask how many words, how many interviews and how many revision rounds the copy line includes.
What the platform changes: hours and running costs, not the rate
Clutch's pricing guide lists the same hourly band, $25 to $49, for designers working on Wix, WordPress, Squarespace, Webflow and Shopify, against $100 to $149 an hour for web design companies in general. The platform does not move the rate. It moves the hours: how much custom code the build needs, whether a marketer can edit without a developer, and what the site costs to run every year after launch.
We build marketing sites in Webflow, so read this section with that bias in mind. Our Webflow vs WordPress and Webflow vs HubSpot CMS comparisons cover the editing and SEO trade-offs; here is the money.
| Platform and plan | Published price | Year-one cost | What it includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Webflow Basic | $15 a month, billed yearly | $180 | 300 static pages, no CMS |
| Webflow Premium | From $25 a month, billed yearly | From $300 | Adds the Webflow CMS and site search |
| Webflow Team | $2,500 a month, annual contract | $30,000 | Localisation, publishing workflows, governance |
| WordPress on Kinsta, Single plan | $35 a month or $350 billed annually | $350 | Managed hosting for one site; themes and plugins extra |
| HubSpot Content Hub Starter | From $20 a month per Core Seat | From $240 | One Core Seat |
| HubSpot Content Hub Professional | From $500 a month | From $6,000 | Three Core Seats; extra seats $50 a month |
| HubSpot Content Hub Enterprise | From $1,500 a month | From $18,000 | Five Core Seats; extra seats $75 a month |

Two other costs sit behind those fees. A platform change adds migration: Orbix puts moving CMS platforms at $3,000 to $15,000 on top of the base build. And editor seats add up: a team of six marketers on HubSpot Professional pays for three seats beyond the three included.
Website redesign budget: a worksheet from published rates
You can estimate a range before you ask for quotes. Below is an illustration for a 25-page B2B site with eight unique templates, two integrations and a move to a new platform, built from the published rates above. It is arithmetic on vendor and survey figures, not a quote.
| Line | How it is estimated | Low | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design and build | 8 templates at $500 to $1,500 each, Orbix | $4,000 | $12,000 |
| Copy | 10,000 words at 32 to 87.5 cents, EFA | $3,200 | $8,750 |
| Migration | 1 to 25 pages, Orbix | $3,000 | $6,000 |
| Integrations | 30 to 80 hours at $100 to $149, Clutch | $3,000 | $11,920 |
| Total before platform fees | Sum of the lines | $13,200 | $38,670 |
Source: arithmetic on Orbix Studio, EFA and Clutch figures listed below
The midpoint, about $25,900, sits inside Orbix's $18,000 to $35,000 band for mid-size sites, and the top end lands just above the Clutch average. That is a useful check: if your quotes land far outside the worksheet, one of the lines is missing or one of the agencies is pricing a different project.
Where to cut without hurting the result. Keep the templates few and reuse them. Write the copy yourself only if one named person can approve it within days, not weeks. Skip a platform change unless the current one is the reason the site is hard to edit. We would also keep a contingency line of 10% to 15% for the change requests that appear once real copy meets real layouts.
What this means for your redesign budget
Start from the decisions, not the average. Count unique templates, decide who writes the copy, and price the platform for three years rather than one. Then ask each agency for a line-by-line quote against that scope, and compare the lines.
That is how we would scope one too. We have built more than 20 Webflow sites in twelve months as a white-label partner to Web Tonic, at two to three weeks each, the largest with a CMS of over 1,200 items, and we run marketing-site projects on a four-week plan with copy written before design. We quote per project rather than publishing a price. Our marketing websites service page explains how we scope a redesign quote.
